The Saloon
Mk1:
Pros
- Seem to be the most resistant to rust and there are some nice examples out there
- The purest of the Mini forms
- The only Mark to have 850, 997, 998, 1071 & 1275cc engines on offer
- Tax exempt
- Classic Insurance
Cons
- Getting quite expensive now, especially Cooper & Cooper S models
- Parts are slightly harder to find with the Mk1 being quite different structurally to later Minis
- Hinges prone to sag, making the door stick out slightly.
- Only drum brakes on standard saloon
Mk2:
Pros
- Some of the faults of the Mk1 rectified
- Tax exempt
- Still a very pure Mini
- Classic Insurance
- 998cc engine introduced in saloon, not specifically to coopers ( but slightly less powerful)
Cons
- Very short production run makes them harder to find
- Still had the external hinges
- Only drum brakes on standard saloon
Mk3:
Pros
- Have internal hinges which conquered the problems associated with the external hinges.
- Quite easy to find & relatively cheap compared to the Mk1 & 2.
- Early cars tax exempt
- Wind-up windows
- Classic Insurance
Cons
- No cooper Model
- Only drum brakes on standard saloon
Mk4:
Pros
- Very long production run
- Cheap and still qualify for classic Insurance (pre 83)

Pros
- Disc brakes on the front
- Very Cheap at the moment
- Alot of LE's to choose from

- 12" wheels, which aren't as good for handling as the original 10"

- Reasonable money

- Quite alot out there

- 1275GT has disc brakes
